There is no room for complacency over avian flu, but the situation needs perspective. Since the virus was first recorded two years ago there have been 68 deaths among the combined 1.7 billion populations of Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and China. If applied to the United Kingdom, the figures would mean only two or three deaths. Could the 'worried well' have over-reacted? The bird migration season has finished, so how great is the risk?
