Concerns over avian flu are being exploited by computer hackers, according to Panda Software, a Spanish computer firm.

Panda said that hackers have introduced a computer virus which is attached to an e-mail supposedly containing information about bird flu. The e-mail features subject lines such as "What is avian influenza (bird flu)?" and "Outbreak in North America" and contains the Naiva.A virus, posing as a Word document.

The virus modifies once the file is opened and creates and deletes files, while a program is installed by the second part of the virus. This enables hackers to take remote control of infected computers. Panda said the virus is manually distributed through e-mail, file transfers or Internet downloads and cannot spread on its own.
